For October, Jay Balchan will be presenting a program on orchid hybridizing. Jay is an orchid hybridizer who is dedicated to breeding rare and exceptional orchid varieties, with a particular focus on the Cattleya alliance. He works on creating orchids celebrated for their vibrant color saturation, exceptional floral substance, and striking symmetry. Join us as we take a look into the world of hybridizing orchids. Jay’s presentation will be followed by our usual judging table and raffle.

Orchids 101 in the greenhouse will be led by David Gould at 2pm. Bring your questions for him!

We’ll be hearing from Tom Mirenda, an accredited AOS Judge and writer for the monthly AOS Orchids magazine, who was invited to judge and lecture for the prestigious Kenya Orchid Society. This opportunity led to an adventure for Tom, spending a month exploring other African countries rich with orchids.  This program shares Tom’s experiences and information about orchids indigenous to southern African regions. After Tom’s presentation, we’ll have our usual table judging of members’ orchids and our monthly raffle.

Orchids 101, as usual, will be in the greenhouse, near the orchids-for-sale area. Charlie will be answering any questions you have about orchids, so join us!

Our August meeting will feature a former GNTOS president and AOS judge, Karl Varian, who will talk about the orchids called Dendrobiums. Karl has been cultivating orchids since the 1960’s and will share his expertise for successfully growing and blooming these magnificent plants. We’ll have our usual table judging and raffle after the presentation. Join us!

Lorna will be leading Orchids 101 in the greenhouse at 2pm. The topic will be about growing Phragmedium orchids, one of the slipper orchids.

Katherine Brown will leading with an educational program dedicated to the remarkable genus Catasetum. Catasetums are some of the most dynamic orchids and are celebrated for their unique botanical traits, including individual plants which produce drastically different male and female flowers. Katherine is our 2026 Vice President and recently hosted the repotting demo at her home. We’ll be back to doing our table judging and raffle this month.

Orchids 101 will also return and take place in the greenhouse at 2pm with Charlie leading a Q&A.

Yes, it’s that time again! Our biannual Society Auction is your chance to snag exceptional plants, divisions from award-winning orchids, supplies and other orchid-related items, while supporting our society.  Whether you are looking to clear some space on your bench or obtain extra orchid paraphernalia or supplies, this is a fun way to help fund shows and other events the society sponsors or attends. Also, remember that, when we have these auctions in June and December, everyone is encouraged to bring finger foods to share before the auction starts.

Because of the auction, don’t bring orchids for a show table – we will be auctioning off every orchid we see! There will also not be any raffle or Orchids 101.

Tim Brown will share highlights from his recent attendance of the 24th World Orchid Conference in Dresden, Germany. Attendees will enjoy a vibrant visual tour of the Dresden, Germany, the sales area, innovative exhibition displays, champion orchids, displays, and top-tier judging results from this prestigious global event. This presentation is an opportunity for society members to experience the “Orchid Olympics” and gain inspiration for their own collections. Tim is an associate AOS judging student attached to the Dallas Judging Center.   While he started out growing several different orchid genera, over the past 25 years he has focused on raising Phalaenopsis.

Orchids 101 will be in the greenhouse at 2pm, and will be led by Katherine. She’ll be answering questions about repotting, as a follow-up to the previous day’s repotting session at her home.

We wish to inform you that the Greater North Texas Orchid Society will not hold its regularly scheduled meeting on Saturday, April 5, 2025, as this date coincides with Easter Sunday weekend.

We recognize that many of our members and friends will be spending this time with family and friends, and we want to honor this important holiday. Our next scheduled meeting will take place on Sunday, May 3, 2026, at our usual time and location.

We appreciate your understanding and look forward to seeing you in May for another engaging and inspiring gathering.

Our February program will be presented by Manny Aybar. He’ll be telling us about the surprisingly diverse world of beginner-friendly orchids, challenging the common misconception that orchids are difficult to grow.  His talk will highlight hardy and adaptable genera that thrive with minimal specialized care in a typical home environment. Success with these resilient plants is achievable, provided a few basic needs are met. Manny is an Accredited Judge for AOS and is this year’s vice-chair of the Dallas Judging Center. He has grown orchids for over 25 years and has participated in research on orchids from his native country, the Dominican Republic.

A REMINDER:  Our February Orchid Show is the following week, February 13-15.  The weekend after that is the GNTOS Plant Sale.  Both events are at the DeGolyer House at the Dallas Arboretum. The House is located in about the middle of the Arboretum.  IF YOU ARE BRINGING ORCHIDS FOR THE GNTOS display – you MUST bring them to the DeGolyer House between 2-5pm on Thursday, the 12^th.  The show opens to the public Friday through Sunday 9am-5pm.

Katherine Brown will be leading our January program about ways to get more orchids into less space, with ideas from members of GNTOS. Sooner or later, we all manage to have more orchids than our original growing area can hold, especially those of us growing in our homes. There can be several creative ways to make more growing area in the same space. Katherine is collecting ideas from members to be shared at the meeting, along with “how-to’s”. She is our Vice President for 2026 and has been growing orchids for more than 20 years. Come join us! We’ll have our usual table judging of member’s orchids and a raffle.

Orchids 101 will be at 2pm in the greenhouse.  Lorna will talking about growing phragmipediums, a slipper orchid.
